Children notice their surroundings, even if they don't realize they are doing it. These steps can serve to aid students in their beginning stages of multiplication. Students may subconsciously recognize equations that they have seen everyday as they walk up the steps to class. These steps can be made into a game/challenge within the classroom, very similar to the game around the world.
When I was a young, my Nana was not impressed that I did not know my multiplication. She would always tell me how vital of a skill it is and how I would use it for the rest of my life. I thought she was crazy... other than my teacher making me do the Mad Minutes, when would i ever use multiplication? Yes, I knew I would see it in math until the day I graduated high school, but come on Nana...I'm never gonna use this is my day-to-day life. She never argued my point but rather sat me down and taught me all my times tables, making me do it over and over again until I could say them back to her without hesitation. She worked with me on this for a while. I never complained, but in the back of my head I thought it was rather useless. Well...! Nana was obviously right. Learning my multiplication was the best skill I took away from math. Just like Nana said, I use it everyday and my skill of knowing them with ease, has made simple tasks, that much easier.
I think these stairs are an awesome tool. I am definitely going to use this, or a similar tool within my school when I have a class of my own!
